Description

The STEAMbot Robot Kit is an affordable robot kit for young people (or those young at heart). It includes all the parts (with few exceptions as noted below) to build a fully functional robot. It helps teach about mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and computer science (programming). It’s functionality can be easily expanded with low cost sensor/actuators available shortly from us or from your favorite electronic store.

The STEAMbot has the following easy to use features:

  • a small speaker to make sounds or play notes,
  • an ultrasonic sensor (what looks like eyes) that can be used to measure distance,
  • can be connected to over WiFi so it can be remotely controlled or programmed via any modern web browser so there is no App to download!

For young people just beginning to learn programming, the STEAMbot can be programmed with the builtin STEAMbot Programmer which is based on Google’s Blockly and is very similar to MIT’s Scratch. The STEAMbot is programmed over WiFi interface so not cable is required.

In addition, you can connect additional sensors (e.g. line following) and actuators (e.g. servos) via the general purpose input/output (GPIO) signals that are available via male connector pins that are grouped along with power and ground.

The STEAMbot is very easy to build requiring only 6 screws to build (no small nuts to lose!).

You won’t have to worry about the firmware (the software that always runs on your STEAMbot) getting outdated. Your STEAMbot has built in support for Firmware Over The Air (FOTA) updates (available only if the STEAMbot is connected to a WiFi network with Internet access).

Batteries Are Not Included

The STEAMbot requires four (4) AA batteries. Alkaline batteries are easily available in most convenience stores or you can order alkaline batteries from us when you place your order. The STEAMbot does work with Ni-Cd or Ni-NH rechargeable batteries but these are more costly in the short term. An alternative to the 4 AA batteries are USBĀ  portable chargers that are usually sold to charge cell phones. You have to make sure that the form factor allows the USB portable charger to fit.
